Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is bio diesel?

Bio Diesel is a fuel made from plant oils and can come from any of the following:- waste vegetable oil, rapeseed oil, soybean, animal fats or algae.

2) Which is Eco Drama's fuel made from?

Reclaimed vegetable oil from takeaway restaurants in and around Glasgow.

3) Will my car smell like a takeway then?

Not exactly. Strangely the smell from your exhaust is quite like popcorn.

2) Can it be used in any car?

No, the vehicle must have a diesel engine.

3) Can I use 100% bio diesel in my car?

Yes! However you also have the option to blend it with mineral diesel if 100% bio diesel is not available.

4) Do I need to alter the engine in any way?

No, bio diesel can be used in just the same way as ordinary mineral diesel.

5) I heard using bio diesel as a form of fuel is pretty bad.  It can strip poorer countries of the crops they would otherwise be using for food production - is this true?

Some bio diesel manufacturers do indeed use crops that should be used for food production and this is not good sourcing.  Reclaimed veg oil however is another story entirely. As long as you make your bio diesel from waste oil, for example from takeaway restaurants, then this is actually helping the environment by preventing their greasy waste from going to landfill sites.

6) Is it illegal to use bio diesel?

Nope, the government is keen to support the use of non-pollution fuels, so long as the relevant taxes are paid by the maker.

7) So why is bio diesel better than normal mineral diesel?

Where to begin! It is cheaper, cleaner, non toxic, carbon emissions are 78% lower, and its not stripping the earth of one of its most valuable and quickly depleting resources - oil!

8)
Is running your car on veg oil not a bit hippyish?

The days of so called 'hippies' being the only people who are environmentally conscious are over.  The unconventional is now the conventional. Taking action for the environment is a way of life and every one of us can make a positive change to our everyday lives, whether that be using bio diesel, cycling or walking more, recycling or reusing - you know the score!

7) Right then, so where can I get this stuff?

a) You can make your own - there's loads of useful sites on the net to help you get started
