The Oil of Life

'Challenging learners aged 11-13 to rethink a sustainable future, through drama, role-play and debate'

The Oil of Life is a series of 3 workshops suitable for upper primary - early secondary pupils, that can be delivered over one full day, or once a week over 3 consecutive weeks. Each workshop runs at approx 1 hour and 50 minutes and so is suitable for a double period. The workshop capacity is 20 - 25 pupils. However we may be able to send 2 workshop leaders out to cover more pupils at the same time (provided 2 spaces are available within your school to run the workshops).

Learning Context for Workshop 1: -

It's 2011 and new oil has been discovered in Loch Lomond. The oil company 'Slick Business' wants to move into the area and drill. The monetary benefits for the local area are described and the locals enticed towards a future that will bring them more money and a better quality of life. However, pupils soon learn that when it comes to oil, everything is not as it seems…

Learning Context for Workshop 2: -

It is 2017. Oil has peaked and is in rapid decline. Through drama, debate and role play, pupils investigate peak oil, climate change and the effects on every day people.

Learning Context for Workshop 3: -

Having had a glimpse of a future world, pupils are brought back to present day Scotland, where they are placed in role as town planners. They are given the task of designing a new eco-town; in doing so becoming ambassadors for the environment and leading us into a sustainable future that can function fully without oil.
